The Specialist is Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2's flexible class: it can mix major and minor abilities from the available regular classes to fill the role a squad is missing. The regular classes still have distinct tactical identities; Specialist does not erase them.
That gives a four-player group two broad ways to build its lineup:
- Use regular classes when their focused kit directly matches the mission or the player's preferred role.
- Use Specialist when the squad needs a hybrid of abilities that the fixed kits do not provide together.
Cold Iron describes deeper weapon and gear customization, new and improved classes, and different tactical abilities. The Xbox listing similarly says Specialist can mix abilities from every available class. Those sources explain the structure, but they do not publish the numerical cooldowns, damage multipliers, unlock order, or full ability list needed for a trustworthy build guide.
Why there is no “best class” answer yet
A tier list written before the worldwide build is playable would rank marketing descriptions rather than reproduced combat results. Class value can also change between campaign encounters and Horde maps: burst damage, crowd control, ammunition support, and survival tools solve different problems.
The useful launch rule is therefore role coverage, not an invented ranking. Start with the class whose stated role you understand, observe what the squad repeatedly lacks, and use Specialist to cover that gap. A later build page should name the tested game version, difficulty, abilities, weapon setup, and repeatable encounter before calling one option stronger.
