GAME INTRODUCTION
What to know before you play

Minecraft is an open-world sandbox available in two main editions. Bedrock is the cross-platform version for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Java runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. A Windows PC purchase includes both, but Java and Bedrock still use separate multiplayer networks.
Choose the answer you need
- Java versus Bedrock platforms, crossplay, mods, servers, and update differences.
- Cross-platform account requirements and why Java cannot natively join Bedrock.
- Realms prices, player limits, world slots, trial, and edition boundaries.
- Official free-trial duration, modes, and multiplayer limits.
- Latest stable update versus Java snapshots and Bedrock previews.
Edition decision in one table
| Need | Choose |
|---|---|
| Play with console or mobile friends | Bedrock |
| Play on macOS or Linux | Java |
| Use the Java mod and custom-server ecosystem | Java |
| Use Marketplace content and console crossplay | Bedrock |
| Own Windows 10/11 and want both | Java & Bedrock package |
Both editions receive the same major game drops, but testing channels differ. Java uses snapshots and can launch older versions. Bedrock uses Preview or beta builds on supported platforms and normally focuses on the latest stable release.
Minecraft does not have one official final objective. Survival, Creative, multiplayer servers, private Realms, Marketplace content, mods, and self-directed building serve different player needs. That breadth is why every page here names the edition and platform instead of presenting one instruction as universal.
