GAME INTRODUCTION

What to know before you play

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time releases for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. This is a separate, Switch 2-exclusive product built from the ground up—not the Nintendo 64 version already available through Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo now confirms new visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, modern camera control, enhanced controls, and new jump and dash actions.

The date and features replace the older announcement-stage information that only promised a 2026 window. If a search result still says Nintendo has not announced a date or has not detailed the changes, that result is stale.

What is actually different

Nintendo's current description goes beyond a resolution upgrade. It says the game has been built from the ground up for Switch 2 and lists four presentation changes: overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, and a symphonic orchestral score. On the control side, Nintendo names jump and dash actions, enhanced controls, and modern camera control.

That is enough to distinguish this release from two older ways to play. Ocarina of Time 3D is the 2011 Nintendo 3DS remake with its own interface and control changes. The Nintendo Classics edition is a reproduction of the Nintendo 64 original delivered through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Neither older edition is an upgrade entitlement to this Switch 2 product.

The official announcement also confirms faster loads, smoother performance, a continuous day/night cycle even in towns, and Threads of Time, which shows story progress and the next objective. The built-in Switch 2 microphone can recognize a melody you hum or play and have Link perform the learned song in game.

Nintendo also confirms amiibo support and Zelda Notes. Zelda Notes lives in the Nintendo Switch app and adds a daily activity record, image-hint location challenges, a virtual ocarina, and a quiz with more than 2,000 questions. Because it is an app service, a Nintendo Account, persistent internet, and a compatible smart device are required.

What Nintendo still has not established

The current first-party material does not confirm Master Quest, new dungeons, new bosses, a Switch 1 edition, a save-transfer path from Nintendo 64/3DS/Nintendo Classics, or a free/paid upgrade for owners of an older version.

Do not use an unverified retailer listing or an earlier announcement recap to fill those gaps. A feature belongs in a buying decision only after Nintendo puts it on the current product page, in a support article, or in a clearly identified official announcement.

Which version should you choose?

Choose the November 2026 Switch 2 release if you want the rebuilt presentation and newly announced controls. If you want to play the original adventure now, the Nintendo 64 reproduction remains available through the Nintendo Classics catalog with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. If you only own a Switch 1, that subscription version is the relevant option because Nintendo has not announced the new release for Switch 1.

Players buying hardware should distinguish the $59.99 software from the $499.99 Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition system, which arrives one week earlier on October 29. Nintendo's announcement lists them separately and does not say the game is included, so treat the system as themed hardware unless its purchase listing explicitly states otherwise.
