GAME INTRODUCTION
What to know before you play
Developed and published by Square Enix, FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is a story-led MMORPG first relaunched as A Realm Reborn on August 27, 2013 and still expanded as a live service. You create a Warrior of Light, follow the main scenario, unlock instanced dungeons and trials, and share a persistent world with other players. Patch 7.55 is the current content snapshot; it is one branch of the game, not the definition of the whole game.
Last checked: August 29, 2026, during Patch 7.55.
What playing FFXIV actually involves
The main scenario is the spine of progression. It introduces each region, unlocks major systems, and opens group duties through the Duty Finder. Many story duties can also be completed with NPC allies through Duty Support, so joining the game does not require arriving with a fixed group.
Your character is not locked to one class. FFXIV's Armoury system lets the same character change combat jobs by changing the equipped weapon after the relevant job is unlocked. Tanks, healers, and damage dealers have distinct party roles. Crafting and gathering are separate playable disciplines with their own levels and equipment, rather than background menus attached to a combat class.
That creates a clear loop: advance the story, unlock duties and regions, develop the jobs you care about, then choose among raids, trials, crafting, gathering, exploration zones, PvP, housing, and social activities.
Before you create an account or buy a copy
FFXIV is available on Windows, Steam, Mac, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix identifies the Windows and Steam products separately; the Square Enix Store's Windows version is not compatible with the Steam version. Choose that PC route carefully before registering the full game.
The official Free Trial is the safest starting point for a new account. It has no playtime limit and currently covers A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood up to level 80. Trial characters can move to the full game. The trial limits gil, trading, the market board, some chat, Free Companies, Party Finder recruitment, PvP, and several account services, so it is an introduction rather than unrestricted free-to-play access.
The paid game uses a Square Enix Account and an FFXIV Service Account. A full-game license and expansions are registered to that service account by platform, and continued access requires active game time after any included period ends. If you add another platform, register it to the service account that already holds the character you intend to use. Creating or selecting a different service account can leave that character unavailable on the new platform.
Nintendo Switch 2 has an additional boundary: Square Enix requires a separate Switch 2 subscription even when the player already subscribes on another platform. The linked Nintendo account and Square Enix account also need compatible regions, and the first account link cannot be undone. Nintendo Switch Online itself is not required.

Patch 7.55 released on August 4, 2026. Its largest permanent addition is the Occult Crescent: North Horn. The patch also added Forked Tower: Magic and its Extreme version, new phantom jobs, elemental weaknesses within North Horn, and the final Phantom Weapon enhancement stages.
