Steam copies do not require the EA app; 21:9 is supported, PC controllers need a keyboard for some text, and Steam Deck is not Verified at launch.
The Steam version of Star Wars Zero Company does not require the EA app. It supports 21:9 ultrawide monitors and Xbox Series or PlayStation 5 controllers on PC, but some text entry still requires a keyboard. The game is not Steam Deck Verified at launch.
Those four answers come from EA's launch FAQ. They should not be blended into a broader promise that every handheld, controller-only setup, or unusual aspect ratio has been tested.
PC support at a glance
| Feature | Official launch status | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Steam without EA app | Supported | The Steam build is described as Steam native |
| Xbox Series controller on PC | Mostly supported | Some text input requires a keyboard |
| PlayStation 5 controller on PC | Mostly supported | Some text input requires a keyboard |
| Button remapping | Supported | PC supports controller and mouse/keyboard remapping |
| 21:9 ultrawide | Supported | EA confirms 21:9, not every wider format |
| Steam Deck Verified | No at launch | This is not the same as a documented “Unsupported” badge or a performance test |
Steam Deck: what “not Verified” means here
EA's wording is narrow: Zero Company will not be Steam Deck Verified at launch. The publisher says it will update the community if that changes.
That does not establish whether the game boots, how stable it is, how long the battery lasts, or which graphics settings are usable. A Verified badge is a Valve compatibility classification; its absence is not a benchmark. Until Valve or EA publishes a status change—or repeatable testing covers the current build—buying specifically for Deck play carries uncertainty.
The official PC requirements are also demanding for a handheld comparison: the minimum target lists a GTX 1080-class GPU, 16 GB RAM, and 1080p/30 on low. Those desktop specifications cannot be converted directly into a Deck frame-rate claim.
Controller support is not completely keyboard-free
EA says the PC version is mostly playable with Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 controllers. The exception is certain text input, which requires a keyboard. If your setup is a living-room PC, keep a physical or accessible on-screen keyboard available for naming or other text fields.
Control buttons can be remapped on PC for both controller and mouse/keyboard. Console controls can also be remapped on PlayStation and Xbox. EA does not say that every interface element can be rebound, so a specific missing binding should be treated as a support issue rather than assumed to be intentional.
Ultrawide and Steam account boundary
EA explicitly confirms 21:9 ultrawide support. It does not make the same promise for 32:9, custom resolutions, or every cutscene presentation. If your requirement is wider than 21:9, the official answer stops short of confirming it.
Steam buyers do not need the EA app to launch the Steam-native version. Downloads, patches, Steam services, and initial installation can still require an internet connection even though the campaign itself is single-player.
For CPU, GPU, memory, and storage targets, use the Zero Company system requirements. For reported launch problems, EA directs players to its official forum and troubleshooting support rather than an unofficial fix pack.
