Magic is a late progression chain, not an early research card: reach Rubiscar by Ship, recruit the Wizard, build Witch's Mire, begin harvesting Magic, then follow the ruins objective to the Academy.

Magic unlocks through story progression: stronger walls → Fishing Harbor → Ship → Rubiscar → Wizard → Witch's Mire → Magic harvesting → ruins and Magic Academy. If the swamp or Magic counter is visible earlier, that does not mean you missed a hidden starting research card. Continue the Harbor and Rubiscar objectives first.
The verified unlock order
| Stage | What to complete | What it unlocks or prepares |
|---|---|---|
| Settlement defense | Finish the stronger-wall objective shown by the story | Opens the later Harbor and expedition phase |
| Fishing Harbor | Expand the Harbor, then construct the Ship | Travel to Rubiscar |
| Rubiscar | Complete the expedition and the Wizard agreement | Brings the Wizard into the settlement chain |
| Witch's Mire | Build the structure requested after the Wizard joins | Turns Magic from a visible late resource into active production |
| Magic harvesting | Assign production without collapsing Food, Iron or Gold | Funds later magical requirements |
| Ruins and Academy | Follow the later excavation or ruins objective | Opens the Magic Academy stage |
The exact Gold, Food and Blueprint costs are intentionally absent. One current walkthrough records them, but the second current route does not independently confirm the values. Read the number in your live objective and reserve that amount rather than trusting a copied launch-week table.
1. Stop looking for Magic in the early tree
The official store says Magic unlocks “as your city advances,” and the developer describes the Magic Academy as a mid-to-late-game system. That matches the current progression routes: Magic does not begin beside the campfire and is not solved by buying every Library card.
If the active objective still concerns walls, defense or settlement growth, finish that chain. Spending on unrelated upgrades can make the later expedition slower without bringing the Wizard any closer.
2. Expand the Harbor and build the Ship
After the stronger-wall stage, the story moves toward the Fishing Harbor. Expand it and complete the Ship objective. The Ship is transport, not the Magic unlock itself; its job is to open the route to Rubiscar.
Before committing resources, read the current objective and protect the materials it names. Buy an optional upgrade only when it increases the production of the resource currently blocking the Ship.
3. Reach Rubiscar and recruit the Wizard
Use the completed Ship for the Rubiscar expedition. The current full-release routes agree that Rubiscar leads into the Wizard agreement. Finish that agreement before trying to use the swamp as a production site.
If the next step appears unaffordable, solve that named resource shortage. Do not reassign every worker to a new late-game resource while Food or the expedition economy is falling.
4. Build Witch's Mire before expecting Magic income
The Wizard joining is a story gate, not yet a working Magic economy. Follow the next objective to Witch's Mire. Current routes place Magic harvesting after that building is completed.
When production opens, move a small worker group first and watch the other resource trends. Magic is important, but it still competes with Food, Iron, Gold and defense for labor.
5. Continue to the ruins and Magic Academy
The Academy is later than the first Magic income. After Witch's Mire and Magic harvesting are active, continue the story until the ruins or excavation objective appears. Complete that stage to reach the Academy rather than trying to force the building from the opening research menu.
The developer has said that the Academy supports passive resource multipliers, temporary bonuses, and effects tied to production, trade and soldiers. That describes its role, not a complete release-build spell or cost list.
If Magic is visible but still blocked
Check the chain from the earliest missing step:
- Is the stronger-wall story objective complete?
- Is the Fishing Harbor expanded?
- Is the Ship built and the Rubiscar expedition complete?
- Has the Wizard agreement finished?
- Is Witch's Mire built?
- Has the Magic-harvesting objective advanced?
- If only capacity is blocked, does the current Research Book or building tooltip explicitly offer Magic storage?
Patch 1.0.01 fixed missing research upgrades and a Magic-trading Buy button that sometimes failed to unlock. Update before treating a missing control as a progression requirement. Patch 1.0.03 is the current baseline for this page.
For the earlier opening, use the beginner guide. If a Witch's Mire requirement is blocked by copies, use the Blueprint guide. The current patch notes cover research and Magic-trading fixes.

QUICK ANSWERS
Questions players ask next
How do you unlock Magic in Hearth and Hamlet?
Advance through the stronger-wall stage, expand the Fishing Harbor, build the Ship, reach Rubiscar, recruit the Wizard, build Witch's Mire and activate Magic harvesting. The Magic Academy comes later through the ruins objective.
Is Magic unlocked from an early research card?
No current full-release route supports that shortcut. Magic opens through the late Harbor, Rubiscar and Wizard progression chain.
Why can I see Magic but not produce it?
Seeing the resource or swamp is not the same as unlocking production. Check that Rubiscar is complete, the Wizard has joined, Witch's Mire is built and the Magic-harvesting objective has advanced.
How do I increase Magic storage?
Use the current Research Book or building tooltip that explicitly names Magic capacity. Public sources confirm Magic has a storage cap but do not reliably identify one universal full-release upgrade name or cost, so this page does not guess it.
