FIRST CHECK

Enable cross-platform play for every console player, add friends by Epic display name, keep the party joinable, and use the error-specific branch before changing network settings.

Official Fortnite cross-platform gameplay screenshot

For Fortnite crossplay to work, every console player must allow cross-platform play, the players must be Epic friends, and the party must permit joining. If you see Denial Reason Code 9, Epic says at least one person in the cross-platform party has crossplay turned off. If you see Error -91, use the separate party/network branch below.

Crossplay settings by platform

PlatformWhere crossplay is controlledImportant limit
PlayStationFortnite → Settings → Account and Privacy → Gameplay Privacy → Allow Cross Platform PlaySet it to Yes for a mixed-platform party
XboxXbox privacy and online-safety settings for cross-network playBoth multiplayer and cross-network communication can be restricted by the Xbox account
Nintendo SwitchNo Fortnite switch to disable crossplayEpic says crossplay is always part of the current setup
PCNo Fortnite switch to disable crossplayAdd console players through their Epic identity
MobileNo Fortnite switch to disable crossplayAvailability still depends on supported device and region

Epic warns that disabling crossplay can increase queue time and may leave some modes available only in Solo. If the group cannot queue after a console player disabled it, re-enable crossplay before changing the router or reinstalling Fortnite.

PlayStation: enable the Fortnite setting

  1. Enter the Fortnite lobby.
  2. Open the menu and select Settings.
  3. Open Account and Privacy.
  4. Scroll to Gameplay Privacy.
  5. Set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes.
  6. Return to the lobby and rebuild the party.

The setting belongs to the PlayStation player's Fortnite account. Check every PlayStation member rather than changing only the party leader's option.

Xbox: allow cross-network play

Epic routes Xbox players to Xbox privacy settings rather than a Fortnite-only toggle. In Xbox privacy and online safety, allow the account to play with people outside the Xbox network. If cross-platform voice is also needed, allow communication outside Xbox as well.

For a child or family account, the organizer may need to change the member's permissions. A local in-game setting cannot override a stricter Xbox account restriction.

Epic currently lists a known Xbox issue in which players may still be matched across platforms after crossplay was disabled. That is a different symptom from being unable to join a mixed-platform party. Keep the setting correct and check Epic's current issue notice before repeatedly changing it.

Add the friend by Epic display name

Platform friends and Epic friends are related but not identical. Use the Epic identity when a console friend is missing:

  1. Open Fortnite and select the profile icon in the lobby.
  2. Choose Add Friends.
  3. Enter the friend's exact Epic display name.
  4. Send the request and wait for acceptance.
  5. Confirm the friend appears in Fortnite's list, then invite or join from the lobby.

Epic's cross-platform squad instructions require a registered Epic account. Do not buy, merge or transfer accounts to solve a friend-list problem.

Check Party Joinability

Open the profile panel and read Party Joinability. Use Joinable when friends should be able to enter without a separate approval, or keep Invite Only and send an explicit invite. Epic says Invite Only is the default for players who indicate they are under 18.

If the friend is visible but the Join button is missing, compare these three states before blaming crossplay:

  • the friend's request is accepted rather than pending;
  • the party is not full;
  • Party Joinability or the invite state allows entry.

Voice is a separate layer. A player can join correctly and still be in the wrong chat channel. Use the Fortnite voice chat guide for Party Channel, Game Channel, console-party chat and parental controls.

Denial Reason Code 9

Epic gives this code a precise meaning: the party includes different platforms and at least one player has crossplay disabled. Ask every PlayStation and Xbox player to check their own setting. Then disband and recreate the party after all settings are enabled.

PC, Switch and mobile players cannot fix Code 9 by searching for a nonexistent crossplay-off toggle. The blocking setting belongs to a console participant.

Error -91 or a party that still will not join

Epic's Error -91 order starts with service status, then moves to the device:

  1. Check Epic Games Public Status for Fortnite Parties, Friends and Messaging.
  2. On PC, verify Fortnite's files in the Epic Games Launcher.
  3. On console, clear the platform cache using the platform holder's instructions.
  4. Confirm PlayStation and Xbox crossplay is enabled.
  5. Check the console NAT state.
  6. Restart the router and the device once.

Do not begin by unlinking the platform account. Account linking affects ownership and identity, and Epic's Error -91 instructions do not use unlinking as a routine repair step.

One-minute checklist

  • Epic reports Parties, Friends and Messaging operational.
  • Every PlayStation and Xbox player permits cross-platform play.
  • Xbox accounts also allow cross-network communication when voice is needed.
  • Everyone is added by the correct Epic display name.
  • Party Joinability and capacity allow another member.
  • Code 9 is handled as a disabled-crossplay setting.
  • Error -91 is handled with the official service, files/cache, NAT and connection order.

Return to the Fortnite hub for the current season and other support. If login or matchmaking also fails, use the broader server-status guide.

QUICK ANSWERS

Questions players ask next

How do I turn on crossplay in Fortnite?

On PlayStation, open Settings, Account and Privacy, then Gameplay Privacy and set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes. On Xbox, allow cross-network play in Xbox privacy settings. PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile do not offer a Fortnite switch to disable crossplay.

What does Denial Reason Code 9 mean in Fortnite?

Epic says Code 9 means the party is using different platforms and at least one player has crossplay turned off. Every console player in the party must enable it.

Why can I not join a friend's Fortnite party?

Confirm crossplay is enabled, add the friend by Epic display name, check that Party Joinability permits the join, and read Epic service status. If the game shows Error -91, follow Epic's cache, file, NAT and connection checks.

Can crossplay be turned off on Nintendo Switch, PC or mobile?

No. Epic says crossplay cannot currently be disabled on Nintendo Switch, PC or mobile.
