Start with Epic's Voice Chat status, then check the active Fortnite channel and account permissions before changing network settings.
Check Epic's Voice Chat status first. If it is operational, open Fortnite's Social menu and confirm that you are in the channel that contains the people you want to hear. Party Channel is for players grouped in the lobby; Game Channel is for teammates assembled inside the game mode.
Use this order
- Open Epic Games Public Status and read the Fortnite Voice Chat row.
- Open Fortnite's Social menu and switch to the correct Party or Game Channel.
- Leave Xbox or PlayStation party chat before testing Fortnite voice.
- In Fortnite, open Settings, then Audio. Confirm voice chat is allowed and the volume is at least 50%.
- Check parental controls and Cabined Account status.
- Check the device microphone permission and selected input/output device.
This order separates a global incident from a channel mistake before you change DNS, router or operating-system settings.
Party Channel versus Game Channel
Use Party Channel for friends who entered the lobby as one party. Use Game Channel for teammates who are on the same team but arrived through fill or another in-mode grouping. If some people are audible and others are not, compare who appears in each channel before touching the microphone.
Xbox and PlayStation party chat are separate systems. Epic says you must leave the console party to use Fortnite voice, even if no one else remains in that console party.
Account and device checks
Fortnite parental controls must allow Voice Chat for Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everybody. The options available depend on age. A Cabined Account cannot use voice or text chat until its parent or guardian completes consent.
On Windows, confirm Microphone access is enabled for Fortnite, then set the intended headset or microphone as the default recording device. On PlayStation 5, Epic specifically says to disable Mute Game Voice Chat from the console Sound panel. On a docked Nintendo Switch, Epic recommends USB audio rather than relying on a 3.5 mm headset that is not working in the docked setup.
When the network is the likely branch
If the correct channel, permissions and device all work but voice still fails, test another VoIP service on the same network. Epic notes that an ISP, region or local network can restrict VoIP even though Epic itself does not block the region. If Discord, Zoom or WhatsApp also fail, contact the network provider before repeatedly changing Fortnite settings.
For an outage affecting more than voice, return to the broader Fortnite server status page.

QUICK ANSWERS
Questions players ask next
Why can't I hear my teammates in Fortnite?
First confirm Epic's Voice Chat component is operational. Then open Fortnite's Social menu and choose Party Channel for your lobby party or Game Channel for teammates who joined through the game mode.
Why does Fortnite voice chat stop when I use PlayStation or Xbox party chat?
Epic says console party chat prevents Fortnite's own voice channel from working. Leave the console party before testing Fortnite Party or Game Channel.
Can parental controls disable Fortnite voice chat?
Yes. Voice Chat set to Nobody blocks it, and a Cabined Account cannot use voice or text chat until parental consent is completed.
