The game is single-player. Partner characters join quests as AI companions whose skills and tactical modes affect combat.
Echoes of Aincrad does not support multiplayer or co-op in its current release. It is a single-player game, and the partner who joins a quest is an AI-controlled character.
That distinction matters because the fiction takes place inside an online game, but the commercial game itself is not an online party RPG. Steam lists only Single-player and does not list Online Co-op, LAN Co-op, or Online PvP.
Partners still change how a quest plays:
- Support Skills can heal, add defensive or offensive buffs, or hinder enemies.
- Combination Skills are coordinated attacks placed on the action wheel and used after their condition is met.
- Switch Mode can split a dangerous enemy's attention and create room for a timed attack.
- Free Mode can direct the pair to focus one target or work through several enemies.
Choose a partner after choosing the job the player build must do. A slow two-handed weapon may benefit from attention control or healing; a faster weapon may use a different support window. That is a system relationship documented by Bandai Namco, not a universal partner ranking.
Crossplay and cross-save are therefore not active multiplayer features to compare. The relevant save question is whether demo data can transfer to the same platform, covered on the save-transfer page.
