LEGO Batman Playable Characters — Unlocks and Gadgets

The base roster grows from Batman to Talia across five chapters; this guide maps each unlock to the tool or interaction it adds.

The seven core LEGO Batman playable characters are Batman, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Talia al Ghul. They unlock through story progress rather than a character shop: Gordon arrives in Chapter 1, Catwoman in Chapter 2, Robin in Chapter 3, Batgirl and Nightwing in Chapter 4, and Talia in Chapter 5. Joker and Harley Quinn are separate Mayhem Collection additions scheduled for September 18.

Character unlock order

The unlock points above come from current post-release walkthroughs and describe when the game adds each character to normal play. A character appearing in a cutscene, prologue, or one-off sequence is not the same as unlocking that character for Gotham activities. Talia is the clearest example: she appears earlier, but does not become fully playable until Chapter 5.

Which character should you use?

Use the story order as an exploration checklist. If an open-world interaction looks impossible, check whether its matching specialist has joined the roster:

• Use Batman for the broadest combat and investigation toolset.
• Use Gordon's Foam Sprayer for pipe and foam interactions.
• Use Robin or Nightwing where a cable must connect traversal points; Nightwing's electrical version also powers compatible devices.
• Use Batgirl for technology interactions that call for hacking or her drone.
• Use Talia for sleep-dart targets and short gaps or damaged passages suited to Ninja Dash.

This is more reliable than searching the map for a suit unlock. Suits change appearance and may add upgrades, but they do not prove that another roster character has been unlocked.

How combat works across the roster

WB Games describes fluid attack chains, counters, takedowns, elevated takedowns, and gadgets. Each core character has an individual skill tree, so spending points on Batman does not turn Gordon, Batgirl, or Talia into interchangeable reskins. Gotham's puzzles and activities make traversal and interaction tools as important as raw combat strength.

Joker and Harley are not simple skins. The Mayhem Collection description gives them their own abilities, gadgets, and takedowns, and builds a separate mode and story mission around them.

Suits, outfits, and vehicles

The base game includes 100 suits and outfits across the playable roster, drawing on Batman film, television, comic, and game history. It also includes more than 20 Batmobiles, Batcycles, and other vehicles. Deluxe packs add themed variants, while four physical LEGO sets provide codes for specific gold character or Batmobile unlocks.

Do not use the presence of a suit as proof of another playable character. The official roster and the outfit catalogue are different things.
