AT A GLANCE

The demo combined Strength, Skill, and Will without menu switching, but it does not establish final builds or balance.

Fable's first playable demo showed melee, ranged, and magic working as one combat kit. This page records Xbox Wire's disclosed hands-on with the pre-release demo; Player Guidebook did not play it and is not publishing a review or “best build.”

Melee and ranged options shown

The two-handed Bower Hammer was slow and powerful, with wide swings, a charged spinning attack, dodges, parries, and weapon-specific finishers. The two ranged examples were the accurate Deepwood Bow and the faster Repeater Crossbow. Ranged hits could target exposed body parts and enemy weak points.

Seven documented spells

SpellDemo behavior
FireballQuick interrupt or charged area explosion
LightningBolts that can chain between enemies
BladesPhantom daggers for distant threats
LiftSuspends a group; a second cast slams it down
RushTeleports behind or vertically toward a target
PushForces nearby enemies away
BefowlTurns a target into a harmless chicken form

The demo mapped four equipped spells to controller face buttons while a trigger was held. That is evidence for the demo's control structure, not a guarantee that default PC bindings or launch balance will be identical.

Enemies in the demo

  • Hollow Folk: melee, ranged, and armored skeleton variants; some could be dismembered and continue fighting.
  • Wraiths: weak flying enemies that could inhabit and produce more Hollow Folk.
  • Lantern Keeper: a flying mini-boss with a lantern weak point, fire breath, projectiles, and Wraith spawns.
