AT A GLANCE

Choose Story for one of six nation narratives tied to Abyssloa; choose Mission for a wider 24-nation objective format with different completion lengths.

Story Mode gives you six authored nation campaigns; Mission Mode lets you choose among 24 nations with different win conditions. Start with Story if you want the game's central conflict and cast. Use Mission when a specific objective or wider faction choice is the main attraction.

Producer Masaru Saito explicitly notes that some Mission Mode nations can finish quickly while others take much longer. There is no honest single “hours to beat” number for all 24 missions.

What both modes share

Both use Organization and Attack phases. Organization strengthens troops and develops the position before the next battle. Attack phases invade connected countries, gain resources, and move toward the current objective. Battles then switch to turn-based hex grids with leaders, units, and elemental advantages.

The mode changes campaign structure; it does not turn the game into multiplayer. Both remain single-player in the current official listings.

Why some players describe Story as restrictive

Recent Steam reviews often compare Abyss with Forsena or Runersia and criticize Story Mode for authored attack order, linearity, or limited sandbox freedom. That is a recurring player-opinion theme, not an official feature omission. Mission Mode broadens the nation and objective choice but still uses defined win conditions.

If open conquest without a timer or prescribed story beat is essential, test the demo and read the current player-review analysis before buying.

QUICK ANSWERS

Questions players ask next

How many Story Mode campaigns are there?

Six, each centered on a different nation during the return of the Abyssloa Empire.

How many nations can Mission Mode use?

Twenty-four. Each has its own win condition, so route length and objective differ.

Which mode should a new player choose?

Story Mode is the clearer first choice if you want authored context. Mission Mode is better when the objective and wider nation choice matter more than one of the six main stories.
