Travelers experience days or weeks while years or decades pass at home; the elapsed time and consequences are known before departure but cannot be prevented or reversed.
Time dilation is a story and consequence system in EXODUS, not a combat slow-motion power. When Travelers move near light speed, their own time slows relative to the worlds and people they leave behind. Jun may experience only days or weeks while years or decades pass on Lidon.
The official rules
- The Gates of Heaven accelerate ships to 99.9999% of light speed.
- A trip feels like days or, at most, about a week to people aboard.
- Years or decades can pass for people who remain at home.
- Travelers know how much relative time they expect to lose before departure.
- No item, ability, or technology can prevent or alter the effect.
- Cryosleep is not needed because the onboard journey is short from the Traveler's perspective.
- People and companions left behind can age, live full lives, or die.
- Returning home does not let Jun rewind the original choice or elapsed time.
The distance example
Archetype gives a simple case: if a destination is three light-years away, six years pass for those left behind—three years outward and three years home—even though the Traveler experiences only days. That example explains the fiction; it is not a universal mission timer because different destinations can be farther away.
Choices survive the journey
Jun's decisions can affect the homeworld and companions, but the consequences may be visible only after an Exodus. The player may take new action after returning, yet cannot erase the years that passed or restore the exact earlier situation.
This creates long-term stakes, but the official Q&A does not publish an ending chart, “least years lost” route, list of companion deaths, or optimal mission order. Those require the final game and reproducible outcomes.
The Gates and their builders
The Gates of Heaven were created by the Elohim, a Celestial civilization associated with ending the Formation Wars and establishing laws across the cluster. They make interstellar journeys possible by accelerating ships through the Pathways network; they do not remove time dilation.

QUICK ANSWERS
Questions players ask next
How does time dilation work in EXODUS?
Travelers move close to light speed and experience days or weeks while years or decades pass for people who stayed behind.
Can time dilation be prevented or reversed?
No. Archetype calls it an immutable law; no item, ability, or technology can stop it, and the past cannot be rewound after Jun returns.
Can companions age or die while Jun is away?
Yes. Anyone left behind ages much faster and may live an entire life or die during a long Exodus.
